Sharp noise from rear end

Sharp noise from rear end

Postby tmurray9999 [OP] » May 14 2012, 2:39am

On my '06 1/2 ton there's a really sharp noise that comes from the rear end around 15-25 mph. It doesn't always make the noise and when it does it's not really loud. It seems to be worse when in four wheel drive, with 4 low being the worst. Any idea what I can do to diagnose/fix the problem.

I'd need a better description of the noise toi give you a really good guess. Do you think it could be a bad u-joint?

The u joint came to my mind first as well, but it doesn't really appear to be going bad (although you never know with these sealed joints). Let's see if I can give a better description: It's eerie and really high pitched, but like i said not really loud. Sometimes it's constant and sometimes it's in and out (in and out meaning it sounds like it's coming from a rotating part). If you have any specific questions about the noise let me know. Thanks for your time

Have you checked the rear brakes for wear, or debris rubbing in the drum?

Probably wouldn't hurt to inspect the rear end differential lube as well.

Thanks for the tips, but yeah, I've checked the brakes and differential lube as well. The problem doesn't seem to be there

I suspect the rear u-joints, when they dry out they make odd noises. I have heard them make a squeak that comes and goes, snap and clicking sounds. What often happens is they rust and there is no more lube left and its metal against metal, the result is odd noises.

U joints are cheap so I think I'll go ahead and replace that, couldn't hurt. If the problem is still there I'll get back to you all in a few days. Thanks for all the help!

If it is the u-joints that are bad, you will know it as soon as you take the shaft out and feel how they move.
