Postby Silver08 [OP] » May 23 2011, 1:22am

Doesn't happen every time but my 2008 silverado has a thump after I come to a complete stop," it's not immediate" when it happens sometimes take about 15 seconds after I stop feels like someone has hit me from the rear
Any ideas before I head to the stealer ship :?:

I can't remember the exact name but it's some kind of a "yoke" in the rear that has to be lubed by the dealer and the thump will cease. My 07 was doing it took it in and it's been fine every since.

my 08 sierra does it as well, you can get the dealer to grease it but it will come back. mine does the exact thing your talking about.. its been greased twice and is doing it now, only has 40k miles.

I had a 2008 for 3 yrs and now a 2010 for just over a year. I do not have this problem. Funny how some trucks do it and others don't? I have a friend who has been a GM tech for almost 20 yrs and I asked him if this was common. He says no, he seen maybe 2-3 people who've complained about it but if someone else drives the truck like him, it does not occur.

There are service bulletins out on the slip yoke at front of drive shaft binding due to corrosion on the mating surfaces. How these get corroded is never explained but nothing seems to fix it permanently on those trucks that seem to have the problem.

Don't know what the answer is BUT I know that you should not grease the slip yoke on 4x4's. There is nothing to prevent grease from entering the transfer case and contaminating the ATF which can result in possible problems down the road for the transfer case. ONLY supposed to use ATF on 4x4's.

Note-Chemicals in grease which are not present in ATF can attack the metals used in transfer case.
