Tranny Noise

Postby TKM [OP] » Jan 16 2012, 11:00pm

I have a 2005 Silverado, 2 WD. I have a high pitched squeal coming from the rear of the Tranny when you turn the drive shaft. Seems to only do it when you turn it one way, not the other. Just changed fluid & filter, nothing unusual in the filter or pan. Truck seems to shift fine, just an annoying noise! Any ideas?

Did the noise start after the fluid\filter change?

No it did not. Was told it may be the rear bushing. But just pulled the drive shaft and rear seal. Bushing is fine. you can turn the shaft and the noise is further up the shaft.

Can you only hear it when you are under the truck, or can you hear it in the cab?

It is definitely worse under the truck, but you can hear it while driving. It kind of sounds like a wind whistle.

Does it do it in reverse or going forward? It could be a bad bearing or a bushing inside the transmission. You could ask lnz197 (username) if he has any ideas, he used to rebuild them for a living.

Don't notice it in reverse. Seems to get worse as you pick up speed.

Was there anything in the pan? Did you cut the filter open to see if there was anything in it?

Nothing in the pan. I did not cut the filter open yet, but good idea. The pan and fluid looked clean though.
