The drain plug really does make it easier. I remember the old TH350's and TH400's didn't have them. You would take a bath in transmission fluid whenever you changed the fluid in them.

They stopped installing plugs in early 2006 and up 1/2 tons. Probably to save money. .15 cents per vehicle??

I always heard that they didn't put the drain plugs in the pan because they didn't want people to do just a drain and fill. They wanted to make sure people would actually drop the pan and replace the filter. I don't know how true that is, but it made sense to me (other than the drain plug would be nice to have, bacause I would always change my filter).
