Transfer Case - 2006 Silverado 1500 4x4

Postby samjaynes [OP] » Feb 15 2012, 6:48pm

Looking to drain my transfer case fluid this weekend, and filling it back up. I read an article about different fluids to use, but still confused. Went to the local Checkers/O'Reilly and they simply said to put 75W-90 Synthetic in it. Rather ask the pros here.

BTW - Changed the rear diff fluid last weekend; hated not having a drain plug. Although the manual says 5/8" to 1 5/8" from the hold to fill up, I am close to the hole (squeezed the bottle a little too hard) - any concerns?

Glad you checked here before you did that! Gear oil DOES NOT belong in your transfer case. You can use synthetic ATF, like what AMSOIL offers.

And you'll be fine with your rear diff. A 1\4" here or there isn't going to make a big difference. Did you use synthetic or regular gear oil?

Thanks for the information - I used a synthetic 75w-90 in the rear. Couldn't get my hands on some Amsoil that I read about. Do you have to go through a dealer for that, or is there a national chain that sells it. I live in Utah, and found two dealers online, which just referenced ordering from the Amsoil site for consumers

Mike (Z15) is our vendor here on the site. I've used him a lot for my truck, and you won't find a better dealer. Believe me, AMSOIL is worth the little extra you'll pay. I love that stuff.

If you have a manual tranfer case you can use automatic transmission fluid not gear oil

Amsoil says just to use their ATF... I went to a dealership and picked up Autotrak II for my transfer case.

I’m getting ready to do my TC too, but am having problems finding the AutoTrak II or another fluid like it. If you find some or something else please post it here so I can get some.

Yeah I used AMSOIL's Fuel Efficient ATF in the TCase and transmission; man that stuff is amazing!
