transfer case grinding

transfer case grinding

Postby dc95chevy [OP] » Oct 18 2011, 12:43am

Hey I'm new to the site and new to the Chevy trucks. I've got a 1500 4x4 95 manual shift for the 4x4. When I shift from neutral to 2 wheel high it grinds but shifts. It doesn't do it any other time. My buddy's 95 2500 does it shifting into 4wheel low. Why does it do that?

it is from the teeth not lining up in the tranny to the transfer case...just shift the tranny into neutral then back to drive to realign them. 4wd low should be engaged with the tranny in neutral rolling 5mph or less.

I'm pretty sure that's normal. I had manual shift on my old 97, and it would grind at times, going into 4Lo. If I didn't do it right, it would grind going into 4Hi, too. But, it had about 300,000 miles on it, and worked fine. These drivetrains are basically bulletproof.

Did the advice above help? Or did you find a different issue. We always like to know how these things work out...

No no no. It's because your transmission, even though it IS in neutral (you did that.......right?) will still try to spin your input shaft into your transfer case, which you say is in neutral. Now, when you shift it to 2 hi, the input shaft has to slow down (meshing teeth inside) which causes the noise. Now IF you are shifting the transfer case while the transmission is in GEAR, that makes it grind because your engine is still trying to drive the input shaft to the transfer case and you are shoving it in gear. Understand? If you really want to shift it with no grinding, shut the engine off and shift the transfer case. The other gentleman was correct about the procedure to shift to low range.
