Transmission flush or Filter and fluid change, which fluid t

Postby dnuke88 [OP] » Jun 22 2012, 3:11am

I did my research for about 2 weeks and didnt find an answer well they were mixed answers. just bought the truck 4mo's ago a 2009 Z71, it has close to 60k and i cant find any records of a tranny fluid change. so my question is should i do a FLUSH or REPLACE FLUID & FILTER. because some ay do a flush and others say do a fluid and filter coz flush is bad for the transmission.

also if I should just replace the fluis and filter what is a good brand to use the only dexron IV fluid i saw was by mobil and pretty much every other brand is Dexron II, II, & IV compatible, so which brand and kind of fluid is the same or closes to the fluid that is in it right now

flush is fine that that little miles, over 100k is a no no flush, 60k without problem shifting, is fine for flush. Definally drop pan and filter change, I will last another 50k until need change again :), I alway trust vavoline transmission fluid, What your kind dexon fluid is your owner manual say to use ? when find out just choose valvoline brand :)

I wouldn't do a flush, especially not a machine flush, owners manual recommends pan and filter drop.

I like valvoline Dexron VI

Transmission flush or Filter and fluid change, which fluid t

Postby Machster69 » Jun 22 2012, 12:13pm

Gm does not recommend a machine flush. Pan drop and filter change js fine. If you want to get cute and swap it all out you can disconnect the upper rad line and screw in a trans cooler fitting(air fitting) with a barb and put some hose on it. Run the truck and itll drain that while you chase it with new fluids down the pan tube with a funnel... 12 quarts(ide buy 14 to make sure it flushes out) vs 5 quarts...

This is the safe proven way to remove the fluid and is not a machined flush... You can contact z15(mike) for information on replacing all or some of the fluid.

I have 53K on mine and I just had the dealer 'flush' and replace the filter, no issues. The bill read 15 qts of Dex VI and a new filter. If they use a machine that just pushes the old fluid out with the new fluid Your good. Now if I had a truck with lots of miles then I would just drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid that was lost and I might even look into getting a pan with a drain so I could drain and fill the trans fluid over a few hundred miles until its completely refreshed.

Transmission flush or Filter and fluid change, which fluid t

Postby Machster69 » Jun 22 2012, 12:22pm

^^^ agree...

One dealer(gerry lane in BR, buncha retards over there) used a machine(not a backflush), but that same dealer told me they dont change the filter bc now it doesnt require service bc its just a wire mesh. The next dealer was adiment and said GM does not recommend flushing the trans and their only service was a pan drop and filter change. The next dealer agreed with the 2nd...

Keep in mind when people state "flush", there are generally two types of machines. One does a complete flush, uses chemicals to clean, and replaces fluid (using an internal high-pressure pump); while the other simply exchanges new fluid for old fluid (and most often uses the vehicles own pump to do this).

I've read bad things about a flush, but wouldn't hesitate to do an exchange. I do my own stuff, so it'll either be a pan drop and filter or a handy man's exchange as described earlier. I've done the latter on my POS Subaru UAV, it works pretty good.
