Transmission Issues

Postby thrlskr [OP] » Jan 09 2012, 5:14am

I have a 2000 Sierra 1500 with 207,000 miles. Recently replaced the transfer case and u joints.

Went for a ride today and felt a major clunk driving down the street. A few blocks later, same clunk, but she would not take off, though in gear. I was able to drive home, but only in 2nd gear.

Transmission fluid is clean, level looks fine, but it was dark, so will check in the am.

I'm hoping I don't need a new transmission, not a good time financially. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

You can look at this post: 30 common problems with the 4L60E I did not see your specific problem listed in the link however.

Thanks Jordan! I did see something similar. According to this link it may be the 3rd and 4th band. I do not want to follow their advice and drive in 2nd though. Will research some more and report back.

If that is it, you should be able to do that repair pretty easily by yourself without having to buy any special tools.

Correction. Just read my original post. Its only working in 1st and 2nd. 3rd and D are the same as being in neutral! Going to get an opinion from a tranny shop tomorrow. The transmission oil is clean and at the correct level.

Ok, here is the update. Comp scan doesnt reveal any engine codes. Pretty sure my tranny is toast!

Been all over the net looking for a rebuild 4l60e. I am going for one with a guarantee since I will change myself dont want to end up in the same predicament again.

I think you can get them from any major auto parts store with a warranty. I'm n ot sure on the price, however.

Thanks. I found a local place that will repair mine for $950. Best price I got so far.

That's not a bad price at all. Does it come with a warranty?
