transmission line leak?

Postby ias98g [OP] » Jan 06 2013, 12:56am

I have and '03 Z71 with a 4.8. I noticed a some oil spots on the drive way and after further inspection it looks like trans fluid. I've seen posts describing the rubber hose crimping problem but this does not seem to be the case. The leak is coming from further back. The highest point I see the fluid is right under the steel transmission lines before the transmission hooks up to the engine. For a reference point it looks like it is about even with the front shock. I can't hardly believe the steel line is leaking. Are there any other common places for transmission fluid leaks?

I have seen them rub on stuff and start leaking. Is there anything near the leak where the line could have rubbed?

It looks like all the little plastic line seperators are in place and I did not notice any contact with any other surfaces. I was trying to think about this last night. Common places to have a leak: rubber lines at the cooler(farther back than that, pump seal (no fluid between block and bell housing), rear seal between the tranny and transfer, transmission pan, lines into transmission (last three all to far back). Are there any other common places that I'm forgetting?

Are you sure it's noit power steering fluid? Other than the cooling lines for the transmission I don't see how transmission fluid would drip near the front shocks.

Isn't PS on drivers side? Would the leak go all the way to the passengers side?

The plastic clips that hold the lines together can wear through the line itself til a littke pin hole size area starts leaking. Very common especially diesels where theres more vibrations
