Transmission problems???

Postby macmanron [OP] » Jul 25 2012, 6:10am

Ok, I am close to buying either the GMC Crew 4x4 1500 5.3, 6 speed auto trans, and have been reading about the trans problems nay have had with the clunking and erradic shifting etc. I like everything about the trucks, although the steering seemed softer than the ecoboost i drove. The GMc was a better riding truck, felt more upscale inside, quieter inside, and I think looks better than the Ferd. The whole trans thing is making me re-think everything. I own a canyon right now and it has been great. What's the deal, is this just an isolated incident, or a large problem GM doesnt want to address? thanks!!! This is a great forum, iv'e only found it last night!

Transmission problems???

In all honesty, its just a different animal than the 4 speed. For me to go from a 4 to 6 feel weird. So weird i spent the first 2 months of ownership at the dealer swearing something was wrong. In the end i just settled with it was normal. And its been 100% fine, think ive gotten used to how it drives also. You buying new?

I think it's just something to get used to. The past two vehicles I've had have been 5 speed autos, and now that I have the 4 speed in the truck I keep expecting it to shift again. Just gonna take some time.

I just bought a new Silverado and got the 4.8 V-8 and the 4 speed because I did not want the AFM or the 6 speed. Maybe you could find a truck like you like that has that engine/transmission combination.

I don't think that there are any serious problems with the new GM 6 speed trans. I owned another brand a few years ago and it had a 6 speed also. It had pretty much the same quirks as my 2011 Silverado 6 speed. Once you get used to it, I really don't even notice it much anymore. It seems to be a well built trans. and I would not hesitate to buy another one. It is just different than the 4 speed, and for those that have never owned a 6 speed, it is a different animal. The AFM also takes some getting used to, but I really don't notice it much anymore either.

There are no problems with the 6 speed. No erratic shifting either.

Go to any forum (Toyota, Ford etc) and you'll find piles of problems. Forums are where people go to complain. Gotta keep that in mind when looking here.

My 2012 4WD 5.3 Auto is shifting fine. My last 2 Fords, shifted insanely rough. I thought the tranny was going to fall on the ground. Dealer said it was normal. On both Fords, doing a fluid flush at 25,000 miles fixed them.

Now that I'm back with GM, the only thing I noticed, is GM transmissions still feel like they did in the old days, before my brief defection to Ford.

By that I mean, I can tell GM engineers still love to maximize mileage by locking up the torque converter "early", and keep it locked longer than Ford does it. I'll bet the engineers tweak the V4/V8 capability with the same philosophy. So you sometimes feel a mild clunk when these things engage and disengage. That's the minor price I have always paid when choosing GM over Ford, but heck, its also why GM mileage beats Ford, and has for the last 40 years.

I love mine. Like you said, better ride than Ford. Also has a lower sidewall in the bed. You can't reach into the bed of a Ford because of that stupid high side wall. Don't get me started on the stupid wide Ford tail gate. You can't reach anything! Oh, and the GM electronics work great. Love the bluetooth calling. I don't want Ford's Microsoft designed nightmare.

Just wait for the 2013/2014 Sierra Silverado, whatever problems they might have had in this generation will be fixed and the interior is much nicer.
