Which Transmission Do I Have? and AFM?

Postby vicman [OP] » Oct 27 2011, 5:02am

I purchased my used 2010, 5.3L Silverado Extended Cab recently and of course the dealer had a lot of misinformation listed about the truck. It FEELS like I have a 5 speed transmission, but the dealer listed it as a 4 speed. From my internet browsing it seems it should be a 6 speed?

I'm also totally unsure if the truck has Active Fuel Management?

I'm not sure where I can find this information as my owner's manual is so vague and broad to cover so many sub models and options.

Thanks for the help.

Does it have the "M" indicator in the dash below the speedometer where you can shift it manually from the button on the shifter? If so, it should be the 6 speed. If it only has Park - Reverse - Drive - 3 - 2 - 1, it'll be the 4 speed.

Oh, and on the AFM, it should be in your DIC (Driver Info Center). There's a mode that tells you if it's running 4 or 8 cylinders.

You could also look at the codes on the sticker in the glove box and look them up, Here.

the engine cover should have Active Fuel Management right on it.... being a 2010 5.3L, you have active fuel management - aka DOD (displacement on demand)...

Thanks for the responses.

I guess I have AFM.

I have 6 speed transmission.

As to the comment on the DIC, I do not have the enhanced DIC yet, but I ordered the upgrade panel last night after reading about it on this site. The new silverado I test drove had it and it was wonderful.

I'm hoping to improve my gas milege by watching the DIC AFM display and impoving my driving habbits.
