Why wont it lock?

Postby Big_John [OP] » Feb 14 2012, 10:44pm

so I know my truck is supposed to have a g80 locker but I can never get it to lock in. My previos truck which was a z71 package canyon with the g80 I could get to lock in super easy and it always worked great. Another thing that has me confused is that if there was something wrong with it wouldnt it make noise or something when Im trying to get it to lock in. So any information on what could be wrong with it or if the nnbs trucks lockers are different in some way would be greatly appreciated.

When working....the G80 has always been very noticeable (at least to me..) Did you check the codes in the glove box to verify it is equipped with the G80? In the past (mid 90's), z71 was standard (i think) with the G80 but now its not even 4x4 in all cases.

Yes ive checked the glove box im positive its suppose to have one i think tomorrow im gonna pull the plug and see if theres any metal shavings or anything on it and if there isnt im gonna put some new fluid in it and maybe that will free something up cause i havent owned the truck since new so maybe it just really hasnt been used. I definitely know how apparent it is to cause in my other truck you could feel it instantly when it kicked in.

The only true way to test the G-80 is to jack both rear wheels off the ground, carefully hold one tire while some one puts the truck in gear. The other tire should start to spin like an open diff should, then the held tire should suddenly engage. I suggest holding the tire with a 2x4 in a way that it won't be slung at your head when the tire takes off. If you do this with one tire off the ground the truck will launch off your jack and most likely screw up either or both the garage and the truck.

My particular G-80 will not engage at any speed past 15 mph, it's supposed to be 25, but it will one tire fry if I spin them from a roll. I did have to crawl through some nasty mud the other day and it worked perfectly as long as I kept my wheel speed below 15 mph. The truck was only moving at a crawl but nothing would stop it.

You didn't by any chance put in a Limited Slip Additive in it do you? The use of additives will delay the engagement of the locking mechanism and may decrease axle life.

I would change the axle lubricant because contaminated axle lubricant can affect the engagement and disengagement of clutches in differential assembly. Yes, the G80 locker has clutches.

i planned on changing the fluid tomorrow because i knew the g80 had clutches and thought maybe it has something to do with bad fluid im hoping thats the only problem. i got the truck used though so i have no idea whats been put in the rear end.

So come to find out my locker is in fact broken. The larger gear that spins the mechanism with the centrifical weights on it has teeth sheared off. When I pulled the cover off there was pieces of the teeth just sitting in he bottom of the diff and there were some stuck to the fill plug, I think whoever had this truck before i got it was ruff on it becuase also while i had it on the lift today I found out my front pump seal on my transmission is leaking. Thats pretty bad for having a truck with only 50000 miles on it.
