won't shift into 3rd or overdrive

1st and 2nd work fine but won't shift into 3rd, no check engine light or codes. Could it just be a clogged filter? High miles and trans. is due for basic service.

It could be a bad shift solenoid. It could also be worn clutches. How does the fluid look and smell?

I just had this happen to me on my 07 sierra 1500 4.8 with 162.000 miles on the clock. My Tranny was toast and I ended up having to put in a new gm transmission.
