2001 GMC Sierra SLE fuel pump?

Postby 1baddad [OP] » Mar 17 2013, 3:45am

My son has a 2001 GMC Sierra SLE extended cab with a 4.8 V8
The fuel pump is going out but we cannot figure out if the pump has 2 plugs or 1 ?
The dealer won't even tell him because they want him to pay their 500.00 prices. So if anyone has an idea on which it is any help would be appreciated.
I'm unable to go help him but I told him I'd ask on here and see what we can find out.

P.S. I think we should have a Fuel/emissions section because I wasn't sure Where to post this :?:

Have you checked the Fuel Pump Relay under the hood? Its in the big black box on the drivers side. I ask this because fuel pumps normally dont "start going bad" the either work or dont. But if you know for sure its the pump and need to know the number of connectors, reach up ontop of the fuel tank from under the bedside by the fuel cap and feel around and trace the wires. When I did the pump on my old NBS the replacement from NAPA came with new connectors that need to be put in in order to fix the defective plugs from the factory

Relay was the first thing I told him to replace. It's good.
He says the truck runs fine. It is the fuel gauge that acts weird. He said it will show empty and then read normal and seeing I'm not there and with his limited experience it acts like there's a short in the pump as he told me that Sometimes he has to crank it 3 or 4 times to get it to start. Regulator? As I said. I'm working and live 2 hours away so.
He was going to order a pump but had two options. 1 or 2 connectors. He felt around and could not figure it out as he said the shied was in the way.

You got a mirror? From the rear driver wheel well you can see it with a flashlight and extension mechanic mirror. Theres like an 80% chance its one plug.

I would guess the gauge problem is either the level sender in the tank or a stepper motor on the instrument PCB. I just changed all 6 of my stepper motors on my 2003 because the tach was stuck at 6 grand and the volt gauge was freaking out every time the truck was running. I did a "How To" but I think that 2001 stepper motors are a little bit different than 2003. An instrument cluster exchange on Ebay is a good second option if you don't want to mess with soldering to the PCB. As far as the hard start, my dad's 2000 Silverado was acting the same way, and a new pressure regulator fixed that problem.

The fuel guage problem is commonly associated with the sending unit thats why they have new connectors to splice in. Very common.

Ah, seeing how sometimes it takes 3-4 times cranking leads me to believe that there is a bad O-ring in the fuel regulator. Again this is a problem that I ran into with my old truck. I believe a new regulator is around $50 and its a really quick change out. As far as the gauge reading different it probably due to a bad resistor on the sending unit and that would call for a whole new pump and sending unit, and we're back to square one on not knowing how many plugs. The only recommendation I have for that is waiting until he's about empty and dropping the tank and getting eyes on the top of the tank. It sucks to do that but if you can get 2 floor jacks under the tank and lower them at the same rate its alot easier than getting under the tank and manhandling it around.

So. Trying new connectors before replacing the pump? Can you get those without ordering the pump? If so I will tell him to wait until I'm off and I'll go do this for him so that he can see what is going on.
He's a quick learner but he needs to be more confident. He's afraid he will screw something up. I told him trial and error. You won't learn otherwise.
Then he says. Easy for you to say, you have more money.

Unfortunately, the new connectors plug into different plugs on the new pump.

Here's the paperwork that came with the new fuel pump when I changed it out on my dad's 2000. Just for general info.
