Emergency Blue lights

Postby hocman22 [OP] » Jul 29 2012, 3:47pm

im a volunteer Fire fighter and am looking to get some lights so people see im responding to a call. I'm looking for a good LED dash light and maybe some blinking fog lights or grill lights and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experience installing lights like these. Thanks!!

Check out Atomic Led cab lights first responder series. Only bad part is they are designed after the ford cab lights so they wont interchange with gm cab lights. But if you dont have cab lights it would be just a matter of drilling holes and mounting them. Ebay has alot of led strobe kits that are cheap but per ebay policy they are all amber or white, ive thought about getting a set and seeing if I clould change out the leds for red. Besides that you will have to find somewhere to get whelen sho me or some other name brand. And.quite possibly have to verify that you are a first resonder and allowed to run blue strobes.

this might be more electrical but- most of the "controllers" for the lights are on the place you plug it into the cigarette lighter, i don't want to see it and was planning on wiring it behind the dash panel into a 12v source but then i guess have no way of controlling it?

They make some switch boxes that can be mounted in different locations. You could also put the switch box in the glove box if you don't want it visible.

Not trying to rain on your parade or anything, but where you are is it legal to use "emergency lights" and/or sirens on your personal vehicle while responding to a call?

Most places the only people who are permitted to have their vehicle decked out are the chiefs and in rare other cases their deputy chiefs.

Think of how many people on the road are going to know what you are trying to accomplish let alone know who you are. That's why us, police and paramedics drive distinguished vehicles that can be easily identified.

Not even factoring in this, will your insurance cover you or someone else if you are in an accident. Remember the number one cause of firefighter fatalities is from motor vehicle accidents. Just because you have some flashing lights and some sirens with your horn doesn't make you invincible or give you the right away. So put yourself in the shoes of other motorists, will they know who/what you are in an unmarked vehicle.

I'm a firefighter myself and when it comes to the safety of our own and others that depend on us its our job to make sure we arrive safe. Don't let yourself be another stat by trying to race to get on the first truck going to an alarm call never mind an actual emergency.

^^^^ I agree with what you said. The way I understand it, in New York state they can run them while in motion, but, nobody is required to yield to them (it's kinda for use as an attention getter, but not an official emergency vehicle). In Alabama blue lights can only be used by police vehicles. In Alabama only authorized emergency vehicles can use red or blue (only police) while in motion. We allow the vol's to use the red lights while stopped at the scene however. When I went to New York I found it strange that the vol's used the blue lights.

Yea were all owe to use blue lights and many vol have them because we have a lot of traffic lights that get grid locked so using the light USUALLY lets people know to not go an block you
