High Mileage?

Postby bramllr [OP] » Oct 01 2011, 2:38pm

Ok guys I have a simple question for yall. I am looking at buying a 2007 GMC 1500 that has 87k miles on it. Do you think that is too many miles for an 07? They want $17,800 for it.

Not at all. We have members here with a lot more miles than that. You may be at the point of having some normal wear issues to address, depending on how the previous owner(s) maintained it. You know, like brakes, fluids, belts, etc.

As far as the motors (assuming you have a 5.3?) in these trucks...very solid. Nothing to worry about. You are looking at a 200k engine easily. Maybe more if it's been well maintained.

The only down side is that the value of the truck will drop quite a bit when it rolls over 100,000. If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time then nothing to worry about.

My 07 has 73,000 and no problems
My 99 has 314,000 and still going strong
My girls 95 has 302,000 and will still snap your head back into the seat.

The newer engines can go a long way with a good service schedule
Buying things I don't need to impress people I don't know.

I just bought a 2005 Crew Cab Silverado 2WD with 102000 miles on it. It has a 5.3 engine.

My uncle has 156000 on his 2004 Silverado Z71 with the 5.3 and it still runs strong.

I have always heard that a well taken care of 5.3 engine will easily get 200000 miles.

Only issue I see with that many miles is right now GM has incentives going on where you could probably get a new truck for that kind of money. Granted it'll likely be a WT based but thought I'd share. That's how I got mine, they knocked 6K right of the top!

180k miles, never any engine problems even though I have towed the living piss out of the thing. I would say easily 100k of those miles were over 10,000lbs towing.. More than the truck is rated.. Word of advise, run 15-40w oil. It will make the truck last forever.

Thanks for the input guys. That truck was sold before I could make a move on it so I have been looking around and have lowered my price range just to get a cheaper truck so that I can save money because we will have a baby come Christmas time. I am looking at a 2006 Sierra 1500 4x4 w/ the 4.8L that has 109k miles on it. ($13,900) I have pretty much the same question..... I dont think that it is high miles for the truck but will the 4.8L last as long as the 5.3L? Pretty much all I have ever owned is diesels so that is why I am asking these questions. I dont plan on putting anymore than about 15k a year on the truck but I dont want it to kill over before its paid for either.

Oh one more question......It has the 4x4 shifter on the floor instead of the push button which I like but does this mean that I have to manually lock the hubs?
