Let there be light

Postby 1500VHO [OP] » Dec 16 2011, 3:29am

Hi to all,

Just finished the install of the GM Universal Retractable Under Hood Lamp Light. These lights were found on early '90's pick ups. I had one on my 1990 Silverado and 1994 Silverado. It was too bad that my 2005 Silverado did not have a under hood lamp of any kind. So I picked up one of these and made the easy install. I placed it on the passenger side, near the firewall/fender. Gives out good light for checking the oil and tranny fluids at night. Because it has a retractable cord of 8 feet or so, it can be pulled out for checking the fuse box and battery area. Then hand crank back into the holder and secure it. The little light also has a magnetic base, so you can place it on the hood for a no hands light where you want it. I'll follow up with more pictures tomorrow of the location. So far it works great!

Here's are some pictures of the light before install...

Nice little upgrade under the hood. Two wires - Ground and Power. The light has its own switch as well...

Hope you like, :-)

This is a cool mod!! Looking at the pictures reminded me that I had one of these on my 1991 Silverado 2500 that was stolen a few years ago. The more I think about all the neat options on that truck the more I miss it!

Awesome...I always wondered why they stopped putting lights under there. Great upgrade that should come stock! ;)

HAHA I seen some of these and was thinking of adding one to mine. For now, I just received the standard hood mounted type I ordered. Where and how much was it if you don't mind me asking. The lowest I seen these going for was right around $50.00 on ebay. Thanks

It's a nice little light. And as some have stated. I wish GM would make these stock items...
Wiring was simple. Two wires. One ground and one for power.

You can find them on the net for $40-50.00.... New... Here's a link: Hawks GM part# 15685571

You ca also check your local junk yards and find them in crashed older trucks...

Take care, :-)
