No mess oil filter wrench

Postby Sylvester13 [OP] » Sep 18 2012, 3:20am

Just ran across this on the Eastwood website. Just wondering if anyone had experience with this product. It would be good on our trucks, but would be excellent (if it works) on my wife's car. Her oil filter is completely surrounded by the exhaust manifold so any oil drips/spills equals a stinking smoking mess for days.

Looks like it would only work with a filter that is pointed straight down.

13 bucks, it's worth a try. I just break mine loose then slide a big zip lock baggy over it. When the oil gets in the bag it takes a minute to keep turning the filter cause it sticks to the bag but I come out clean!

Another option which I've done on trucks before is to get a remote oil filter kit, and you can just mount it up somewhere that is nice ad easy to get to. I even had an old Blazer which came with that option from stock.

Yeah, but in my case that's exactly what I have. Take a look at this wonderful setup: (You're looking up from the bottom of the engine.)

Wife has driven Subaru's for years. The old models were great. The oil filter was on the bottom with absolutely nothing in the way. Then beginning with her 2008 they came up with this. It's just about impossible to get the filter off (especially if the vehicle is the least bit hot) without spilling some on the exhaust, and the way the pipes are made the oil creeps into seams where you can't wipe it off. It will literally burn and stink for a couple weeks after an oil change.

Our trucks aren't too bad, but looks like it would keep things a little more tidy.

Looking at that picture, I'd say the Subaru is an excellent candidate for a remote oil filter! especially if you do any racing/rally type driving with it.

As far as your actual question goes, though, as long as that filter has a little bit of a downward tilt, that filter wrench should keep it clean. Even with filters that are at a 45 degree angle, the oil tends to run down the side of the filter when you crack it open, so it will for sure collect in that no-mess wrench.

For $13 I am interested. There is nothing worse than oil running down your arm while trying to remove a filter.

Looks like it will work on that application.

I work on medium duty diesel trucks and the filters hold up to 4 qts. of stinky black oil, I use a punch to knock a hole in the bottom and let them drain until empty, do the same thing on my truck and cars.
