To buy or not to buy

Postby lblair [OP] » Dec 22 2010, 7:51am

A GMC Sierra...

Lol, I just became a member. I currently drive a 2nd gen dodge ram that has been the most maint I have had to do to a vehicle. I already have more than she's worth into it and want to possibly trade it in on a GM before something else goes wrong with mine. I found a couple nice GMC Sierra's locally...04 w/56k miles 4x2, ex cab, auto, 4.8L....06 w/77k miles, 5.3, auto, ex cab, 4x2....07 w/64k miles, ex cab, 4x2, 4.3L. None of them have much aftermarket besides a bedliner, which Im fine with. I dont need 4x4. The 04 and 07 are both right around $13k asking price and the 06 is $17k. I drove the 06 tonight and it drives nice and looks good, but has the most miles and is the most money. I like the 04 with the 4.8L and it has no signs of anything leaking...undercarriage is spotless.

So, my question is...between years of 04-07 GMC Sierra, which is my best bet? I wont ever haul much besides a motorcycle trailer or pop up camper...those are rare tows... Is the 4.8L a good, reliable motor? What about the auto trans? Coming from Dodge, I hate transmissions!!

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Well, I bought the 04 w/56k miles today. Couldnt turn it down when they offered a 5 year/60k mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Well the 07 is the new body style so you have to decide what styling you enjoy best. As for the 4.8 if it is just a daily driver and not towing or hauling much that motor will be fine plus better gas mileage.

What are common problems with this truck? Im not really interested in putting a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it.... About all I want to do is dual exhaust, K&N filter, tint and MAYBE a different stereo. I really hope these trucks dont have as many "common" problems as my Dodge did. I spent over what I initially paid for my Dodge within the first year of owning it, and didnt want to try another year..

Thanks for any knowledge!

I have had no problems in the few months I have owned mine other then the ball joints and tie rods boots blowing out. I have been warned against driving with the gas tank under 1/3 to prevent the fuel pump from over heating and was told by one silverado owner the most common thing to break over 100k is the water pump. Other then that nothing that I know of. Keep up with maintenance and she will keep you on the road.

Not an issue, you had me second guessing myself though. Glad I'm not going crazy.
