What is the best repair manual?

Postby easystreet [OP] » Oct 25 2011, 2:36am

Who makes the most detailed and model specific manuals?
I have an '01 Silverado 1500HD.
I know of the Hayes & Chiltons style. Is there a better one? If not which of those two are generally the best?
I would like to find one that covers my vehicle closely. Not a 1995 - 2005 Chevy GMC truck van suv all in one 1/2" thick, "this will help you change your oil" manual!

I always liked the "Motor" brand best as far as aftermarket. You could always go to the dealer and order a factory one.

I got a set of GM factory manuals off of eBay for my 2003. Less than 100 bucks for the 5 books. I'm sure that there are some on eBay in both the printed form and on CD. Motors is a good second choice.

I was just about to ask this question for my 94 Silverado. To refine the question a little bit, what about a manual for the neophyte mechanic?

I don't have anything for that specific manual, but I have to say that more and more manuals are online now. I know that sometimes in the shop, it's nice to have a paperback copy. Even some of the major parts supply store have online manuals. I know that they are a life saver sometimes!
