I have a 2000 silverado 1500 4x4. Whenever i turn it makes a rubbing noise. The 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive works perfectly fine. Is this something to be worried about? If so I am just wondering if there is any way to fix it besides replacing the entire thing because it is expensive
Changed wheel bearing yesterday on a friends silverado. His complaint was "it only makes noise when i turn"... Lol he left happy! Doesnt mean urs is a bearing but possible. U said transfer case, but the noise is in the rear? Do u know how to test the bearings?
Yes, without getting into a debate about it, the rear should have no play top to bottom or side to side. The front should have no play top to bottom, but can have a little play side to side(not bearing related)...
This bearing in this video of mine had 0 play, but was definitely bad! The one i changed yesterday had top to bottom and side to side play, after changing it, 0 top to bottom but still side to side... Front side to side play isnt always bearings
On the read axle the best way to check the wheel bearing is to remove the axle and visually look at the bearing. They will have some plat with the axle going in and out (Side to side) due to the way they are designed. They are not tapered like front wheel bearings. The inner race is a part of the axle shaft and if it is damaged the shaft will have to be replaced along with the bearing.
2003 Silverado 1500 4x4 had a true 'grinding' noise after rear axle hits any bump - even an expansion strip in a bridge. Sounded like t-case was being forced into gear. Wouldn't stop until vehicle came to a complete stop. So I replaced the 246 t-case because they're problem-prone. WRONG ... noise continued ! I then disconnected front drive shaft. NOISE on bumps as before. Disconnected all wiring to T-case WRONG. .. noise started on bumps as before. Took off encoder motor WRONG! Noise as before. So I had a friend stand next to the road right in front of a pothole that always sets off the noise. Sure enough grinding - not clanking or squeaking - was coming from passenger side rear wheel area. I changed places with him and he drove by. At impact of RR wheel, quick metallic clanking following by the very loud grinding noise.
WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? RR noise on impact but it stops as soon as vehicle does. I suspect wheel bearing but I've never heard of one making a GRINDING noise as if something is being forced into gear. HELP please.
Check the rear brakes. It sounds like maybe something has come loose in the rear parking brake assembly. You should remove the rotor to visually inspect the parking brakes.
Jordan: Thx for the tip but I have already removed the brakes and the rotor. Things still look like new in that area (all four rotors were replaced about a year ago as were the e-brake shoes.) This is a crazy problem!
i changed my wheel bearings after you guys told me to and the problem is still there. i also changed my transfer case fluid today too and there was no metal in there. ive really been listening close since i changed it today and its weird. when i press on the gas and turn it doesnt make the sound. but if i idle into the turn or even let my foot off the gas for a second it will make the noise. my auto and 4x4 still work perfectly fine. this is driving me crazy. what could it be?
Lol i never said to change them, i said to test them! I never recommend throwing parts at a problem without clear diagnosis. You prally shouldnt have changed them less they failed a test for bad bearings :/ at least you got new ones i guess?
haha. i know. figured id do it anyways. 185,000 miles were on the truck so i wanted to do it just for maintenance anyways. i do alot of highway driving
