I know everyone hates AFM here but does anyone have any opinions or experience with the V4 Max product from Range. I know a lot of you love the AFM shut off from Range so I was just curious what you guys thought about this? My guess is it just falls under crappy AFM but I was curious as I am hopefully picking up their AFM shut off soon.http://www.rangetechnology.com/pages/v4

All the oil burners are burning the oil on the AFM cylinders, you can see it on the spark plugs and none of the "upgrades" GM came up with are going to change that. Why buy a V8, live with crappy vibrations and lousy throttle response, ruin the engine, just so save a few ounces of gas? No thanks! I payd for a V8 and i want to drive a V8! Btw, i don't see a difference in the gasmileage with or without AFM. If you will save any gas, how long do you think will it take, till you brake even with the cost of the range thingy? There's no way in hell i would do that.

Lol I knew this would spark some conversation :) I was always going with the shut off I was just wondering what everyone thought of Ranges other option. I already have 25,xxx km (not miles) on my rig so hopefully I not just delaying the inevitable but as you all mentioned having full V8 is definitely preferred:)

There is a constant Internet rumor that all GM trucks burn oil. The FACTS ARE that GM sells approximately 50,000 units a month (SIlverado/Sierra) combined. So there are many, many trucks on the road made between 2008-2011. Per GMs own stats-most have the 5.3. I left out 2007 because there were indeed prevalent oil burning issues. The '08s would be approaching the point where there is oil burning according to the miles the 07s had when issues started. If you are correct-where are the numbers? The GM service department would be backed up with '08s awaiting repairs. Yes, on this forum we have seen issues-but the percentage has very, very small based on the number of complaints verses membership on this board. I have 39,000 HARD MILES on my truck. It doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. I recently towed my 5,500 pound travel trailer 8,000 miles in 8 months all around the U.S.A. (Trip report elsewhere on this forum). Even against major head winds, and high RPMs it didn't use a drop of oil between changes that were dictated by OLM.

Show me the numbers of these hundreds of thousands of trucks on the road that are burning oil.

How many quarts are you adding between oil changes? How many miles do you put on your truck before you change the oil?
I bought the truck and only put on 8,000 miles. After the first oil change (Oil Life Monitor said 35% left) I was 1.5 qts low.
After that I started to watch and after 1,000 miles (Oil Life Monitor said 65% left) I was 1 qt low.
It is burining for sure and I am getting the Oil Test done at my dealer. I just want to stop it before it keeps getting worse.

To the original question I had a V4 max for about a month. It was pretty bad experience. It would go into V4 way too often, at times when it shouldnt. The driveline vibration at times was scary worrying that something would break. I returned it for their device that turns off AFM. So much better now!

Well, they used new rings when they built the engine on day one and it currently burns oil. What else has been done to prevent failure of this new set of rings...

Ill bet the new rings get you through your warranty period... ;)

Piston rings don't fail on their own, there was a cause. Afm is without debate the reason the engine began consuming, its in plain English on the Bulletin being used to treat your vehicle. So Imo, forget deflectors, and their others "fixes"... Just turn it off and be done.

I've read on this site that in the 2013 - UP that they have a FIX for the issues. I am assuming that they would do that when fixing my issues. See below from the BULLETIN.

#100601008G:
Engine Oil Consumption on Aluminum Block/Iron Block Engines with Active Fuel Management (AFM)
(Install AFM Oil Deflector and Clean Carbon fromCylinder and/or Install Updated Valve Cover) (Jan 3, 2013)
Subject: Engine

I would try the range website. Amazon.com is selling it too but it shows "currently unavailable". Can't find it anywhere else up here.
