How do I confirm fuel pump failure? Gas guage is faulty, (reads empty then normal on/off). Changed fuel filter, oil pressure shows normal while cranking, replaced relay. Cranks over normal, sometimes coughs or starts for a second then nada.
sounds like two separate problems, but still related to one another.
-the issue with the fuel gauge is most likely the fuel level sender is failing. its sold separately from the fuel pump assy. but, you will unfortunately have to pull the pump to replace the level sender, as it is mounted to the side of the pump.
-the "coughing" issue may be the pump itself. you should check fuel pressure at the rail.
depending on what you find, you're still going to have to pull the pump.
As stated above, you may have good pressure but not enough fuel flow. The sending unit for the gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly. I would reccomend only using an AC Delco brand unit.
^^^agreed. you get aftermarket, and you'll be doing it all over again in a couple of years.
