Bleeding air from radiator coolant

Postby USA1 [OP] » Dec 10 2011, 1:41pm

Well I'm fixing to change out my thermostat today (running to cool 180 degrees) and before I start I just thought I would ask a few questions. I heard the thermostat is on engine side near the lower hose (4.3) so with it mounted that low whats the best way to fill the radiator back up and get the lest amount of air. I know fill the radiator, or in this case the tank, start motor and with the cap removed, when you see the fluid drop the thermo just opened, keep filling until tank is to the full line. Is that about right or is there bleeder valve somewhere or? thanks ahead of time

im not sure if there is a "bleeder valve" on these, i know what ur talkin bout though, ive seen some on like gm 3.1 vehicles, but i would do it just the way u describe, fill it up run int with the cap off fill again, replace the cap let it run watch your temp, make sure ur overflow is full too let it get up to temp and then shut it off let it cool it will draw from the overflow. Then when cool add to your overflow and radiator if needed and should be good to go!

No bleeder valves. Make sure the vehicle is level, if the filler neck is at a low point compared to rest of system it could be difficult to purge the air from system. As noted, after driving the vehicle to a complete normal operating temp, check the recovery tank the next day and top off. Might have to do this several times if the drive cycles are short.

Well that wasn't a problem at all. I have read different opinions on where the thermostat was. It is on the engine side of the upper hose, just doesn't look like it though as there's no housing I'm used to seeing....oh well all is good, maybe it will help someone else down the road. thanks
