Re gas mileage:

I did a road trip in my new 2011 Sierra 4.3.. departed Chicago with only 600 miles, drove to Atlanta and on to Melbourne FL. Filled up, checked mileage.. first tank 19.2 (excssive speeds of 75+). Next tank was over 20.something and the third tank it exceeded 21.5mpg. Speed made a difference. My best mileage was at 65 to 70 mph.

Oh, in background. I had already switched to Mobil One 5w30 and had inflated tires to the 32 pound maximum on the sidewall. Oh, I had an ARE low profile top too.

Here's my two cents. I think that Mobil One (any full synthetic) will give you nearly one mpg.

I have an 2011 Extended Cab 4x4 with a 4.8L, 4sp auto, and 3.42 rear end and I average a consistant 15.2mpg in city driving where I only hit lights every couple of miles while driving back and forth to work -- 90% city and 10% express way and A/C on all the time. When I get stuck in daily construction lately (takes about 20 min to go 2 miles) my avg drops to about 14.7 mpg. On a short 300 mile trip on the highway, I was averaging 22.5mpg dirving about 68-70mph.

My mileage is much better than the EPA estimate for my truck on the window sticker --- 13city/17Hwy.

This is my 1st post, so hello!

When I got my 2001 extra cab, long bed, 4.3, 3.08's with 80k miles, used to get about 17 highway going to work, going through 2 passes 5 miles of the I-5 Grapevine. Its down to about 14 or so now. MPG dropped after installing new trans at 200k. Has about 215 k now. Never was a very fuel efficient rig. Underpowered for sure.

My 2010, 1500, 5.3 with 3.08's, averages about 18.5 on the same drive, 21+ highway on relatively flat highway. Towing my 3k gvw, 6 x 12 box trailer, it drops to 15-16. Wind resistance is the killer there.
2001 was a miserable drive with same trailer... 11 mpg going 60 mph.

I have a 03 4.3l v6 ext cab. With 20"rims 275/55/20's tires. And I just calculated my milage today and I get 11.28 miles /gallon. That's 90% city driving. No motor upgrades.
