fuel pump problem

Postby Serenade Sierra [OP] » Aug 01 2012, 3:03am

Hey, my buddies truck is a 96 Cheyenne with the 4.3 vortec, the fuel pump on it wont come on when you turn the key, we pulled the bed and wired it directly to the battery and I hear it come on but nothing with the key turned. Ideas?

We've checked the relay already.

Time to get a wiring diagram and trace the circuit. It could be a number of things (such as a bad ignition switch, open in the wiring harness, blown fuse, ET).

Hi, need answer really quick if possible but we jumped the 30 and 87 on the relay and the fuel pump will come on, put a relay in it on top of the jumped wires and the relay clicks on and off. So how do I fix it to where it comes on with the ignition switch now? If I leave it jumped it will just stay on constantly, it still will not come on by itself by turning the key. I checked all the wiring going into the spot on the relay and its all good nothing torn, melted, etc. What do I need to do?

Ok, well the relay works, the pump works....
When you jumped the relay, you used a hot wire from the battery? If so then that could still mean the ignition isnt supply voltage to open the relay... im suspecting the ignition/fuse/short! But im sure your already suspecting that... worst case, if he needs the truck like NOW then just run him a switch he can toggle to get it from A to B...

Trtace the wire that powers the relay to see what is wrong with it. Obviously you are not getting signal wire to the relay. Possibly a bad ignition switch.

I jumped the relay by putting a wire from the 30(hot) to the 87 holes where the relay goes, the 30 is the hot from the ignition, the 87 I guess is the power to the pump. Didn't use the battery

Then I'd say it is not getting power from the supply side for the main power to the pump. It sounds like you are getting the signal feed ok (from what I understand you as saying).
