How to get the most power out of my 4.3L

Postby 03'silverado4x4808 [OP] » Apr 26 2012, 4:45am

I was just wondering if i should spend money trying to squeez the most power outta my 4.3L (exhaust, CAI, supercharger/turbo?, headers, cams, etc..) or should i spend the $ and swap it out to an old 350 smallblock and build on that. truck is a 2003 4x4 1500 longbed 5-speed single cab. thanks for the response!

Well your never going to get the power out of the 4.3 that you could the 350. My opinion get the 350 the work on it to make more power.

6.0 swap! Lol. But I would go for any of the modern LSX family of engines. In all seriousness find an LQ4 out of an 03-06 Chevy 2500 and build that. I've seen people do a mild build, around $2k total including engine, and make 360whp. Checkout LS1truck.com for some ideas and more info. Great site if you want to do a V8 swap.

^Because the gas mileage is great.........

I'd swap a Vortec 5.7 (96+) into it since the 4.3 and 5.7 are very simliar as far as wiring and fuel injection goes. You'll have to add two wires to the fuel injector harness and get the computer reprogrammed for it, but it'd probably be one of the easier swaps. There's a lot of s10 swaps like that.

thx everybody x_grave_x ur idea sounds beast. what about the 5-speed trans paired to that 4.3, will it bolt up to the LSX motor? and i mentioned a 350 because that way i wouldn't have to reprogram a computer.

If you dont want computers, bolt in a 572 crate motor. Gawd id love to have one in my truck....720HP out of the box....mmmmmmmm

If your stuck on the 350 option, build it to a nice little 383.Those are mean little motors

Im not too sure which 5 speed you have exactly, but Id go for a T56 6-speed out of a camaro or vette, lol. Beyond that LS1truck.com would be you're best bet for more info. You can do a carbed setup on an LSX style motor. I believe edelbrock makes the conversion kit. Good luck on the project.

Hey, I was told to run v8, but if you do some investigating you'd be surprised. I rebuilt my '95 4.3 & put 30 over & '96 vortec heads, Comp cams 500/500 lift roller cam w/ 206/210 dur @ .50", edelbrock intake, headers, mass air flow, a extreme-fi bored tbi to 590cfm, electric fan, Jet pullies, Jet chip and my ecm re-worked. Just the engine rebuild she pushes 300 hp @ 5000 & 335 ft lbs @ 3500 dynoed. You add all the bolt ons you will be surprised, run a Jet programmer & add something like 100+ hp & I can't remember the tq. Its shy of 100 lbs less, possible of 350 hp/tq without going nuts.... why not be different and blow a 350 away.... oh, the rebuild didn't cost more than $3000 with cam, intake and heads. goodies were extra.
