Poor Gas Mileage

Postby jjackson082604 [OP] » Apr 26 2012, 7:57pm

I hava a 2003 GMC Sierra with a 4.3L V6 and it is killing me on gas. I fill up the tank and 150 miles later im at half a tank. What can I do to improve my gas mileage? Or is something wrong with some sensors or other parts? My truck has 20" rims and is stock height, and has dual electric fans, nothing fancy. I dont have a heavy foot, and only drive from home to work and back.

Let me know what I can do..

Thanks

how many miles per gallon does that math work out to be?

Whats the tank size on the '03s? I believe the 88-98 1500's had a 20 gallon tank, the NNBS 1500's have 26 gal tanks. not sure about the NBS.

Poor Gas Mileage

Postby Machster69 » Apr 26 2012, 8:37pm

U need to fill up, reset odometer, and at next fillup divide your miles driven by gallons filled, this will give u an actual number. Bc 300miles per tank isnt exactly horrible... Thats what my old z got...

My husband has a 2000 gmc sierra and he took it in and got a fuel injection cleaning and also added the tornado inside. He does brag about the tornado alot and recommends it.

I am not sure what it looks like i hear him tell some of his friends its in his air intake. When I hear from him i will ask more about it.. He says it gave him more power.. I drove his truck from California to arizona and had to fill up after 220 miles when he put that in i a little over 500 miles.. drove from california all the way to my parents in Tucson AZ.. so it does work some how..

How much bigger diamater are the aftermarket tires/wheels that the stock ones? It may be time to get some lower gears if they are a lot bigger.

I have a 26 gallon tank. And I figured that when im at half a tank my truck wasted allready 13 gallons. So 150 miles / 13 gallons used = 11.53 miles per gallon.

I just purchased the truck from a guy on craigslist. He claims that he changed the spark plugs about a month ago, wires about a year ago and had a oil change like a month ago too. I inspected the truck more and found out that the muffler was cut off after the cat converter. Will that make a difference?

O and the tires I beleive are 275/55/20.

Thanks for all of the replies

Poor Gas Mileage

Postby wheeler82 » Apr 26 2012, 10:52pm

Yeah might not be a bad idea to change out plugs and wires just so u know there good to go! Also check/change out rear end fluid might not be a bad idea either! And no I don't believe that the muffler should have anything to do with fuel mileage. Just curious any check engine lights on?

No, There is no check engine lights on.

I got off the phone with a GM dealership and they recommended me a induction service inorder to clean out my injectors. That will set me back $120 + tax.

Another question, will the distrubitor cap be another thing I should change. And if so what brand would be the best or second to the best.

I am convinced to just do a complete tune up. The truck does have 112k miles on it. So any suggestions on motor oil and filter. I was thinking royal purple, mobil 1 and Castrol GTX EDGE synthetic oil.

Let me know what other things I can do.

Thanks for all of your responses.
