Your EVAP canister is a part of your emissions system. They help reduce the release of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. Inside your fuel tank, the pressure of gas naturally builds and that gas, rather than released to the atmosphere, is released to an EVAP canister until it can be drawn into your truck's fuel intake.

The EVAP canister itself costs over $100 so I'm not surprised a dealership charged you $400 to repair it. Not saying that price is justified, but you know how dealerships get.

Do you by chance have an after market gas cap? This could be an issue. The next question sounds stupid, but you'd be surprised. Is the gas cap securely tightened? Both of these issues can potentially cause this problem.

As for having it fixed, your truck should run fine. Some issues I've heard is that if the gas is leaking instead of being contained in the EVAP canister and filtered it can cause your truck to smell like gas.

If you don't notice the odor of gas vapors, then it probably won't be a problem and is likely a sensor issue as opposed to a physical problem with the canister.

Personally, I'd have it fixed because it would just bug me knowing something was wrong with my truck. It's not a difficult fix and could done by a qualified mechanic for less more than likely.
