Oil in the Intake Manifold

Oil in the Intake Manifold

Postby AZ Rider [OP] » Mar 27 2012, 3:38pm

So last night I was installing my throttle body spacer when I noticed that there is a small puddle of oil sitting in the heart of my intake manifold :? . Has anyone else expereniced this before? It hasn't affected the performance of the truck at all, but I do know that shouldn't be there! Is it hard to remove, clean, and re-install the intake manifold? Thanks for all of your feedback in advance!

That's not all that uncommon. The intake is pretty easy to take off (compared to other engines). Unless it is an excessive amount, I would not worry about it too much because it will probably just get oil there again.

The puddle was the size of a quarter. So I really didn't freak out when I saw it, but I did get a littel concerned. So that's normal to get oil in the intake manifold?

Think of it like that, the only way for the engine to breath is the intake, it you over level the engine oil the only way for the oil to go out is through the intake and even if you push the engine to the max by off roding or over loading and pulling it will throw some oil out throgh the intake

I will have to check the oil level then on my break. It makes sense, but I wouldn't think the Dealership would be so stupid to do something so wreckless like that!

It is normal for there to be some oil in your intake manifold due to the PCV valve. This allows pressure to be released from the top of your heads to the intake manifold (its an emissions thing). The byproduct is an oily mist that travels from the top of your head to the inside of your intake manifold. It will not harm your engine, but over the years it will gunk up the combustion chamber. You can stop the oil build up with a catch can, but you have to empty the catch can every oil change.

It could also be a bad PCV, allowing to much oil to blow by.

Well that is another possibility that the PCV valve has gone out too. The truck does have 50k on it. Nonetheless, I think I’m going to install a new PCV valve and take off the intake manifold and clean it as well. I think down the road I will install a catch can for the oil. I just don't think it's a good thing to see oil in the intake manifold.

Checked the oil level in my truck and it seems to be spot on. So after finding another thread on here, i've decided to go ahead and equip my truck with a oil catch can along with a new PCV valve.
