Throttle Position Sensor problem

Throttle Position Sensor problem

Postby arreis1002 [OP] » Jun 20 2012, 5:13pm

I have a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8L

I have had the same issue multiple times now. If I let the truck idle

for any length of time, especially when the weather hot, it goes into

"Reduced Engine Power" mode and I can do nothing but limp to the side of

the road. I have taken it to my local mechanic (who I've used for over

20 years) and each time it throws a TPS failure code. My mechanic is at

a loss as he's never seen this happen before and it has happened 4 or 5

times to me. The TPS has been replaced each time.

Any ideas?

I have had similar symptoms while I was working on a Ford Taurus. The fix for it was replacing the complete throttle body. You could try removing your throttle body and cleaning it really good.

I'm almost certain that the throttle body was replaced on on of the occasions it failed. I can't check as all my bills are in the truck and the truck is in the shop :-) I just don't get why it runs just fine until a specific set of circumstances i.e. hot weather & idling for several minutes. It's not like the engine over heats.

ive had the same problem and replaced the tb and still came back, so they re-grounded the tps and haven't had the problem for about 35000 miles now, might want to look into that

What do you mean by "re-grounded"? Added a ground connection?

Thanks for the reply
