Thanks for your replies guys. Is that something I can put off fixing for a while? What does it typically cost to fix bad valve stem seals, guides, rings, etc.? Sorry, not very knowledgeable when it comes to this.

You can replace the valve seals without taking the heads off the truck. To replace rings, it is basicly a rebuild of the engine.

With 117k miles on it i wouldn't think the rings would be bad, its strange the the valve seals are gone at that mileage??

Valve seals are just rubber. They will harden over time.

Any idea as to what it could cost to get new valve seals if done by a local mechanic? Thanks.

Probably around $400, but that's just a guess. It depends on what the shop labor rate is. I'm not sure what the labor hours would be for that job. I'd figure around 6 hours or so.

Thanks for your help. I'm losing oil pretty quickly (enough that I don't need to get an oil change because I keep adding), which will get old real fast...but at the moment I can't afford to have it fixed. I did just switch to 10w30 a little over a week ago, so maybe that will reduce the leak a little, since it's a bit thicker?
