07.5 Silverado running hot while towing uphill

07.5 Silverado running hot while towing uphill

Postby TurnDriverSide [OP] » Jun 03 2012, 9:32pm

I have an 07.5 Silverado 5.3 that runs hot when it tows my Samurai and trailer up any hill longer than a mile. The weight of the Samurai and trailer is approximately 5,500 lbs.

When I am towing uphill I make sure I baby the truck and it still manages to run hot, between 215-235.

Any ideas/suggestion to make it run cooler would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I added one last year, it helped out the transmission temperature, but not the engine temp :(

You could try electric cooling fans, but it seems strange that the truck would run hot in the first place. Are there any other problems with the truck? When's the last time you had the radiator flushed and the fluid replaced?

When was the last time you had the radiator and cooling system flushed, thermostat replaced?

Oh also you live in AZ but what is your altitude, or how far above sea level are you?
At higher altitudes the boiling point of water is lower.

My fluid was replaced 2 years ago, I never replaced the thermostat. What kind of a thermostat would you suggest?

The first hill it starts running hot at is at around 3,000 feet.

It has the electric fans in it right now, I was considering installing a fan clutch..

You can try this goodness: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/rdcb.aspx

I've got it in my truck, and it does make the coolant more responsive to the engine cooling system. Mike (member/Z15/) can set you up with a discount, since he's a dealer.
