09 Silverado 5.3 oil leak

Have a couple of questions. Is 500 miles long enough for the oil to start showing some die and same for the rack & pinion? Last time it was in was 1200 miles ago and took that long for the oil to reappear. Would it cause any damage for it to go longer with the die in both?

Yes, the oil with the dye should show in 500 miles. The dye will not hurt anything.

Kind of hoping it has the leak so i can get it fixed for piece of mind. It might be a while before I get that many miles on the truck do to the fact I only live 4 miles from work. Maybe i should let my wife drive it she know how to put some miles on the truck. On second thought na

If the leak is bad enough, it shouldn't even take 500 miles. If they cleaned it off really good all you have to do is keep an eye on it and if you see it just take it in then.

Mine was also leaking from the oil pan at 30,000 miles. I originally went to the dealer with that tsb i posted above and thats when they diagnosed the oil pan. Mines been dry ever since the oil pan was fixed. That sure seems like alot of residual oil on your pic. good thing is you are under warranty. I would watch it like a hawk, any new drippige id take back to dealer. Mine also leaked a bit from the oil drain plug because off the poor seal.( I like the old drain plugs like on my 97 monte with the magnet on the end). I also heard these can leak near the seal of the oil filter. Another porisity issue that needs rtv for the repair

I wish I would have saw this before I posted my thread. Oh well. I'm bringing mine in to get fixed next week. They said it was the rear main leaking.( that's where the dye came through) I'm going to show them that tsb.

Well took my truck back to the dealer after the 500 miles. They called me up and said no leaks come and get it. I had crawled under neath the truck before i took it in and with my uv light had seen some die under the chrome inspection cover. Was not a lot but was noticeable to me. When i told the service writer that he said come in and we will put in the air . Once i get in to the dealership i talked with the service manager and we had discuss that it was seepage and I can agree with that I think. So he said that the district manager would probably not agree to fix it if it was just seepage. I am not very happy that i spend over 30,000 dollars and have a truck that seeps oil. If i had known that it would do that after 20,000 miles i dont think i would have bought the truck. Maybe GM should put that on the window sticker "Caution may start seeping oil" and see how many people will buy there cars and trucks. I am going to keep my eye on it and take it back in with every little bit of seepage i see. I am still under bumper 2 bumper warranty for 3 months and powertrain couple of years.

Some seepage is normal, however, if it has seeped enough after only 500 miles to have dripped down where you can see it I would think it was too much. Ultimatly it will be up to the service rep. He would probably fix it if you talked to him in a nice tone.

Ultimately it is up to GM whether to acknowledge and approve repair of the leak.If mine was leaking that would be my next move.

I was refering to the GM service rep, not the dealers service writer.
