I believe they call for 5W-30. I would use what it calls for.

2000 Silverado 1500 z71 5.3L 180k miles oil weight question

Postby Machster69 » Jun 09 2012, 4:01am

The 2000 gives a variable weight depending on climate... 20 is too high for sure! I ran 10 and im in Louisiana. Now days they all call for 5w(fuel efficiency) so yeh, use what jordan says!

My rule of thumb is use what the manufacturer recommends. When it gets in the high mileage area you can choose to buy specially formulated oil for high mileage or use a little thicker. Once I get a little over 100k on my trucks I used 10w30. You DO NOT want to you really thick oil because it could starve your lifters for oil and cause lifter tap. Nobody wants that annoying jazz

I've been using nothing but Valvoline 10W30 high mileage oil for the last 140,000 miles, right now I'm at 243,000 miles and I never have to add oil in between changes I always change it when it tells me to.

The high mileage oils work great. Personally, I recommend Mobile 1 High Mileage for a synthetic, or Valvoline MaxLife as a semi-synthetic.

Keep in mind that at full operating temp, a 5w-30 and a 10w-30 have the same "thickness". The first number is how the oil acts when cold. Being in Dallas, you'd be fine with 10w30, but I think GM says 5w.

I've got 217k and have been using 5w30 Penzoil. I use this oil throughout winter and summer in northern Utah.

With those kind of miles you could run 10W30. If the engine hasn't shown signs of issues with the 20W stuff?, lifters, leaks, etc.
