Anyone have problems with the 5.3's using oil? My brother was driving his 2001 Sierra yesterday when the check oil level message came up. He pulled over, and checked the stick. More or less he was about 2 quarts down. He had just driven the truck Denver to California and back, and was about due for an oil change. The truck only has 45K on it, and it's not burning or leaking oil that I can see. I've heard that GM changed the design of the PCV valve to eliminate a disappearing oil conditon. Any thoughts?? :? Thanks guys!
Similar thing happened on my 99. I drove from Texass to Iowa (1100 miles) with no problem. Changed the oil a couple days after the trip and few days after the oil change my low oil light came on. I changed the PCV and havent had any issues since. That was 3-4 yrs ago.
Gordon, No load at all, truck was empty. My brother was reading a GM bulletin that said 1qt every 2000 miles is considered normal. Not sure if that is just for a AFM engine or not. I'm going to check the PCV this weekend and see if there's an excessive amount of oil in the hose. Thanks guys!
I am at the Dealer right now getting my First Oil Change. Then they are going to be checking the Oil at intervals. I guess when that is done and they see that it is burning oil I will be able to see what they want to do. I imagine they will change the Pistons and Rings?
