2002 sierra 1500 5.3 oil leak

Postby jeepers72420 [OP] » Nov 30 2012, 7:19am

I have a oil leak it is dripping off bell housing. Thought it was oil cooler blockoff replaced gasket found its leaking from the oil pan right by block off.have leak on other side where drip would fall off outer starter bolt. Pulled starter and checked crank sensor nothing. Then i fought my way to check valve cover gasket and oil pressure sending unit and cam sensor all dry. On bell housing i have looked into round cover plate and its wet cant really see rear seal but motor side of fly wheel is dry. Truck has 200,000 well maintained miles always mobile one used. Truck still has stock riveted pan gasket. My question is how will i know if rear main seal is leaking? Willi be able to tell when i replace oil pan gasket? I would think that if rear seal was leaking wouldnt motor side of flu wheel be wet with oil?

with 200,000 miles i`d be surprised to see the area around the rear main completely dry. clean the area where the suspected oil leak is and after driving, check for the first signs of fresh oil. you`ll have to make judgement calls as you progress but the dry flywheel is a good sign. you`ve already found a leak and its surprising how just a little oil can be a BIG mess. replace your oil pan gasket and add a seal conditioner additive such as lucas. its got to be done anyway and the rear seal requires a motor pull.

2002 sierra 1500 5.3 oil leak

Postby WrensLawnCare » Dec 01 2012, 2:05am

Not sure if its the same on the 5.3's but I replaced my rear main seal when I replaced my wheel wheel. I already had the transmission out so an extra 5mins undoing the bolts for the cover was worth it to go ahead and replace it as it was at 200k miles already

Mine was on a 6.0 though

I had almost the identical situation with my 2003 with 100K on it. I pulled my inspection cover out of the bell-housing and it was dry in there too, but man was the truck making a mess on the garage floor. I ended up having the dealership change the oil pan gasket because I didn't have time. The tech that did the work said that oil pan gaskets were pretty common, especially on the corner by the oil filter because that's were the high pressure oil from the pump passes from the block to the pan. The clean photo was taken about a week or two ago, this is after 1500 miles with the new gasket. All is clean and tight so far!! I would just change the oil pan gasket for now, and then re-evaluate afterwards.

Yeah I think it is the rear main seal, mine is leaking and I am getting ready to get it done. Going to have every seal replaced while the motor is pulled.
