2005 5.3 Oil Leak

2005 5.3 Oil Leak

Postby tsduke [OP] » Jul 16 2011, 9:09pm

I have a oil leak that I can't find the source of. I have oil on the filter, oil residue at the back of the motor where it meets up to the bell housing and on a could bolt heads above the filter. I noticed it first when I changed the oil 600 miles ago. It's still not a ton of oil and it's not pooling on the garage floor yet, but there is more oil build up than when I did the oil change 600 miles ago back in late May. Pretty sure it's not the filter, but I can't see an obvious area of the pan gasket that it's coming from or any other place for that matter.

This is a GM reman new motor replaced under warranty last year and only has 8000 miles on it. Hate to see an oil leak already.

It kind of sounds like a small rear main seal leak if it's oily where the motor and tranny meet.

That's what I'm worried it is. I imagine that's not a cheap job. :(

2005 5.3 Oil Leak

Postby tsduke [OP] » Jul 17 2011, 3:02pm

I don't even see any oil cooler lines going to the filter area. There is a piece above the filter with a couple bolts holding it. It has oil on it too.

I popped that cap on the bell housing and the cap had oil on it. I looked up in and maybe saw some oil in one spot. Hard to tell as oil goes everywhere.

Based on some pics I found on Internet it looks like I have a cap where the oil cooler adaptor goes.

oil line adapter plate, rear main seal, intake gasket, front main (crank) seal, oil pan gasket, head gasket, and i think my timing cover wants to leak.

That was exactly it according to shop. Oil cooler block off plate! Of course I'll keep it eye on it to make sure.

I took it in to shop on the chance the would warranty it given that I only have 8000 miles on a new gm motor. I really only had 12k/1 year warranty and I'm over the year. They covered it. :D
