2008 Burning Oil

2008 Burning Oil

Postby DFournier1988 [OP] » Aug 08 2012, 2:29pm

Hey guys, I have a 2008 Sierra 5.3L V8. I have noticed for a while but am fairly new to the site, that the other day I went on a small trip with my wife to visit her family so about 1300 km return trip. My oil was full on the dipstick and I checked it yesterday and it was almost down to half on the dip stick and it almost always seems to be worse on a trip compared to around the town driving. Now I read a few places that in 2008 there were quite a few 5.3L burning oil... Would really like some information! It's crappy because I didn't hear about it until after I bought the truck and the price you pay for them it shouldn't be burning oil, my uncles Sierra was 15 years old and didn't burn a drop. Oh yes and I use Castrol Edge 5W30 meeting the GM specs... can someone please help me out with some info!

Thanks in advance!

2008 Burning Oil

Postby Machster69 » Aug 08 2012, 2:33pm

Typically blamed on afm, it can be disabled via a tuner. Or you can go through the process with the dealer in which they might tell you its within spec(GM actually has an allowable amount of oil that can be burned). If you fail, then they will hook the motor up with some deflection shields etc.. And itll be good! But very typical of all 5.3s... Even without afm...

Take it to the dealer if you are still under 100,000 mile. It has to do with the AFM system. They will install a shield in the oil pan and if that does not fix it then they will start with new rings and so fourth. PS. they may charge you for an oil change and have you bring it back in 1,000 mile to check it. I would do all the long distance driving that I could. Keep us up todate.

Wow guys, well the warranty runs for 5 year or 160 000 KM here so I'm just under so I should bring it in ASAP and will they charge me for this shield? Just wondering! I'd probably be f*cked anyways... I bought the truck used and been doing my own oil changes for the last couple of changes haha.

Do you think if I got a tuner, that it would help? Because I am looking to get one anyways sometime. Don't need the AFM enabled anyways haha

The warranty is with the truck no matter who the owner is or how many owners there was. As for doing you own oil changes, that has no bearing on it. Its a known concern with all AFM engines and if a dealer gives you grief, find another dealer that is more reputable.

Chevrolet/GMC have a procedure the dealer must follow that includes 'oil consumption' test to verify the problem and then steps they have to take to try to resolve it. Some dealers are better than others at customer satisfaction and there is nothing much you can do about that but try to find the good dealers.

I have the same problem. They installed the deflector shields and it is still burning oil. I am doing my second oil consumption test. I just went 700 km and the level dropped 2 marks on the dip stick, a bit more and I will be taking it back to the dealer for them to measure the consumption. Make sure they don't try to over fill the truck like they did to me and say that the level should be over about 3/8 of an inch if the truck has been sitting for more then 2minutes. I will keep you updated in the progress of getting to the bottom of this.
