5.3 AFM Oil Pressure

5.3 AFM Oil Pressure

Postby tsduke [OP] » Dec 31 2011, 11:00pm

Just curious what you all see for oil pressure in these. I took my 2012 out for a drive today to get it good and warm and well...really just driving it cuz I'm loving my new truck.

Anyway, oil pressure running 55 after warmed up was a touch over 40. When I got home and was idling in the garage the oil pressure dropped to around 30. While idling I noticed it would jump up and down between 30 and 35. Not rapidly, but It would run at 30 for a couple seconds then raise to 33ish.

Is that fluctuation normal? Does my pressure look in line with what you get? I know these aren't mechanical gauges so maybe that's some of it.

Just curious is all. My 2005 would run 21-25ish hot idle and right on 40psi at 65-70. I don't remember that much fluctuation when idling. Maybe 1 psi.

Mine fluctuates when idling as well, fairly normal I think? My pressure seems low on this truck as compared to my old ones though.

Thanks guys!! Just like to know what somewhat "normal" is. This site is a much better source than the manual. The manual isn't any help on what psi to expect.

Well I was told by the dealer that GM did this to save fuel! I have a 2011 and I was trying to compare it to my old 2007 Suburaban. He said the did this to get better fuel mileage.

tsduke, mine runs exactly the same as you. Mine does not really fluctuate at idle. But like you said, these are only "directionally accurate gauges", so I am not worried about minor fluctuations. I think your are just fine.

Re: 5.3 AFM Oil Pressure

Wow I was just actually going to ask the same question. At 3450 miles I did my first oil change today. Wanted to get the factory fill out and replaced it with Pennzoil Platinum and a new PF48 filter. Of course with the first change I pay more attention to see if any changes to engine noise, pressure etc On a side note trying to fill with the 5 qt jug is a little bit of a pita due to the "glug" so I burped a little bit out of the funnel down onto the headers and the ground below.....so not quite the full 6 qts but close enough....lol. I'm sure there will be little oil spots wherever I park for the near future lol

But I digress.....I never really paid attention to the oil pressure until today. At idle is seems to be just a bit under 40 and close to 60 while driving....normal I guess ? It soes fluctuate a bit between 40-60 while driving

That's actually a good bit higher pressure than what I'm seeing. Are you talking hot engine?
