5.3 harmonic balancer wobble confirmation

Postby bc40ton [OP] » Oct 02 2012, 12:47pm

Hello everyone. I just picked up a 99 Silverado 5.3 with 157k mi to be used as a work truck. Initial quick look after test drive I noticed Orange silicone on left bank exh manifold. Truck ran fine, I bought truck. Days later squeal from serpentine belt. Found harmonic balancer was wobbling. Rubber insert looked fine but picked up another balancer. Swapped said balancer with used one and still same amount of wobble and squeal. I happen to have a lathe my little shop, so i chucked it up and old balancer runs true. Now the million dollar question. Did I buy a truck destined for failure? What are my options. Truck does have some type of tapping first 500' or so taking off in morning but runs quiet as a mouse and strong all day after that. No noises, misses. Thanks for any insight.

It sounds like the crankshaft nose may be worn, allowing the balancer to woble. The only real fix for this is to replace the crankshaft.

That doesn't seem to be the case. The balancer gave a steady hard pull all the way off and the used replacement pushed on smooth steady and tight also. I might pull it and mic it. How hard is it to pull the pan clearance wise, beings it.is 4 wd. That way I could see if the mains were wearing more to one side.

I doubt worn main bearings would cause what you describe. I have, however, seen a broken crankshaft cause what you are describing. I had a friend that had a 454 in a Suburban that the crankshaft broke in half between the first main journal and the timing chain sprockret in such a way that is would still run. It would knock a bit and the balancer would wobble. We were shocked when we saw the crank was completely broken after we took it apart. I'm not saying for sure this is what happened to yours, but it is possible. I kinda wish now we had taken a picture of that crankshaft.
