5.3 Oil consumption question

5.3 Oil consumption question

Postby chuck_0369 [OP] » Jan 06 2013, 11:55pm

I have. 2007 NBS Chevy with AFM and the oil consumption problem. I bought it used, it has 74000 miles on it now. Since I don't have any warranty and don't want to spend thousands of dollars getting things changed on my engine. As long as I keep the oil at the proper level will any damage be done to the engine? Or is the only real issue it burns oil, I don't want to get rid of the truck because of this problem I don't care if I have to add oil every now and then as long as the engine will be okay.

Go to page 5 or so and post on the official consumption page titled 5-3-l-chev-and-gmc-oil-consumption-issue........ You'll find more info and help there

I'm in the same boat you are. Bought my 07 with 65000 and an expired power train warranty. Thought I was getting a great truck until i noticed the oil consumption. The previous owner did install the oil deflector. So I am on my own. What I am doing is, for 1, I turned off the AFM with a tuner. And 2, working on cleaning the engine with some seafoam. Not sure if this will work. My next step is to talk to a dealer about doing the cleaning to the cylinders. Not sure on the state of my pistons and rings so I hope I'm not to late.

Same here. Mines an 07 as well with 90000 miles. I even put mobil 1 synthetic oil in it thinking that would help and it hasnt. I just keep adding oil. I love this truck and dont want to get rid of it either. How is your oil pressure? Mine is about 40 or half at a stop and driving is like around 60-65. Do you have those same numbers too?

I love my Silverado, just had it in 4wd for the fist time in the snow the other week.
Oil pressure is good when cold it is 60 psi when warm between 40-50, never goes below 40.
Do you know what all the repairs run if paid out of pocket to fix oil problem?

That's about where my oil pressure runs. Around 40 at a stop, and up around 60 when running down the road. Not sure What the repairs would cost out of pocket. I am gonna try and talk to my dealer soon and see what the cleaning would cost and maybe price the piston and ring replacement for the hell of it too. I'm sure its not gonna be cheap... From what I can tell I've used about 1/2 quart in 1800 miles since my last oil change. I run Valvoline Full Synthetic 5w-30.

Maybe I will ask dealer what they recommend and what it will cost, just sucks because truck runs great does not smoke no leaks. In the fall I changed all fliuds to synthetic except oil, I have 6 qt's Amsoil for the next oil change. Not sure if switching to synthetic will do anything for the oil consumption though.

5.3 Oil consumption question

Postby kpm » Jan 08 2013, 3:06am

I had rings and piston along with the baffle. The service mgr said it was about $2100 in service work. Yikes.

I'm in the same boat, have some consumption (not accurately measured but its 2-3 quarts per oil change). Working on getting motor flush and then putting in Pennzoil Platinum to make sure the engine is cleaned inside.

My truck is completely untouched by a authorized Chevy dealer since 2007 as I'm in Sweden. It'll be a huuuuge cost to do any of the things like replacing piston & rings here. Getting all the parts + shipping + customs and then the service cost.

I'm thinking about getting the AFM deflector installed in the pan, depending on the cost. I don't want to do this myself. Maybe even replacing the valve cover to the updated version after seeing that it only costs about $100 + the cost to get it here. But tearing down the engine... wow

I will let you know how the flush and new oil works out. It's gonna be a while before I get it changed and then a longer while before I have any numbers on the consumption.

The biggest question that I have is, what is the long term issues with the oil consumption? If it's only a matter of the cost and hassle of having to fill 'er up it's not a big deal to me.
