5.3 Rebuilding

Postby ScottyDont412 [OP] » Jan 05 2012, 7:43pm

Ok so I am a newb here. I am in the early stages of my engine rebuild, I am going to bore the block out +40 and put forged pistos and rods in, trick flow heads and cam and I am debating on a root or centrifugal charger (suggestions?). However, I am ready to pull the engine out but it wont separate from the tranny. I got all the bell-housing bolts, torque converter bolts....am I missing something?

A lot of times the dowl pins in the back of the block will corrode to the aluminum bell housing. Take a pry bar or large screwdriver and, if you can get it between the enging and bellhousing, pry them apart. A lot of times the dowl pins will come out of the block and stay in the bellhousing. If that is the case, after you get the engine (or transmission, depending on which you are removing) out, take a hammer and punch to remove them from the bell housing. Then just tap them back into the block. It may ease reinstallation if you lightly sand them to remov4 any corrosion first.

Thanks for the info, I was feeling those and they seem to be pretty rough. I'm going to pull the eng and trans out together over the weekend.

Be sure and take some pics- this sounds like a fun (and powerful!) project.

Lol. I was planning on the bolts. In the army you see a lot of things like that happen. And I will post plenty of pics. And I'm hoping to get atleast 500 horses hopefully.

Did you already select all your hardware.. cam type, headers, etc.. doing a stall. Going to be a street rod or lifted build? Curious to see what your thinkin. I'm getting the itch to do another street rod, but the slammed RCSB's look fun.

No I haven't selected anything, still looking into all of it. I know trick flow has a head n cam kit I might get. Its going to be semi lifted. Not too high.

No I didn't think of putting in a 6.2, I want to stick with a 5.3 and just make it a monster. Check out Super Chevy's Modern Mouse Project, I just ordered the Comp Cam that they used in the project. The max hp was 494 and max tq was 470ish, I figure if I supercharge it, I'll be well into the 500 range. Which would be plenty of power for my truck, if I decide to get all crazy I install a 383 Stroker kit. This is more fun than just swapping and tuning.
