5.3 ticking

5.3 ticking

Postby trabuccomlfrd [OP] » Nov 13 2010, 3:12am

so i just recently bought myself an 07 sierra 1500 with 30,000 miles (all highway) and i have been driving it fairly hard and i had been driving it all day and tonight i started to notice a very slight ticking noise, is that from flooring it too much or is it because the engine was working all day? will the noise go away? if not what can i do to remedy it? is it bad? thanks for any help!

Ticking as a valve train tick?
Only while at idle?
Are you hearing it from inside the cab, or standing outside with the hood open?
I assume the oil level is okay?

My 5.3 has 149,000 and even at 55,000 it has always had a tick at start-up and then goes away after a few. I have talked to other guys with the same motors and some have never had it happen and others have had it from day one. Remember, its not a drag car and can only take to much tho.

I have heard this in past vehicles. It might be coming from the exhaust manifold. If so, it won't be an issue--annoying yes, but not going to have long term issues. Are you sure the noise was not there earlier in the day?

Is this an engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM)?

Does the tick show up on start and then go away or does it do it all the time engine is running?

See below for start up tick....

2007-2010

Allure; Avalanche; Camaro; Envoy; Escalade; G8; Grand Prix; Impala; LaCrosse; Monte Carlo; Rainier; SAAB 9-7x; Sierra; Silverado; Suburban; Tahoe; TrailBlazer; Yukon -- AFM engine, valve lifter tick noise at start up

Verify the start up engine tick after sitting for 2 + hours does stop after a period of operation- replace all lifters AFM and non- AFM

Don't replace other internal mechanical parts for start-up tick noise

Stick a long screw driver or metal rod on the valve covers to listen for the tick. If it's coming from under the valve cover than it may be a rocker lose or lifter sticking. Not a major issue just keep an eye on it.

OR Put a piece of paper around your exhaust joints and see if it "puffs" signaling an exhaust leak. Also, try and do the same around the exhaust manfolds. I had a truck with a cracked manifold that "ticked" when I was pulling a heavy laod and when I put my foot in it up a hill to pass.

Re: 5.3 ticking

I was at a Chevy dealer the other day to pickup some parts and met a friend there. He said they were getting ready R&R the AFM lifters in his 2008 truck for lifter noise. Every once in a while a lifter would make noise. He was talking with the SM who mentioned the heads have to be removed to change the AFM lifters so it was going to be a full days job and they were getting him a loaner. He said he has been complaining since he bought the truck but GM finally conceded to the problem with lifters bleeding down. His was the first truck the dealer was going this on.
