5.3L Crate motors

5.3L Crate motors

Postby Ryan2011GMC [OP] » Oct 26 2012, 5:40am

Looking into adding some (a lot) of jam to my truck, maybe not tomorrow but I'm looking for a plan.

I'm thinking the stock rotating assembly may not be up to a blower, or other add ons, like a turbo maybe? So is there a place that sells crate motors that are built to make power and handle a blower for these trucks?

I can't be without wheels to long, so maybe something I can build on the side and throw in over a set of days off?

Would I be better off to buy a 5.3 out of a wreck and start from scratch?

How does the ECM handle big changes?

I've built a 350 before, but nothing with a computer so I really don't know what to do.

Thanks.

With the mods you list you want to have done, get a brand new engine that will handle the mods. Check out GMPP website. There are many, many different crate engines to choose from. There is no way I would buy one out of a crashed vehicle unless it was going to stay stock.

Nope a 383 is a 350 with a 400 crank in it. A 383 is a completely different motor than the 5.3l and your intake ecm.. will not work. You could step up to a 6.0l and with some tuning the ecm you could make it work with no problems and the 6.0 is a great building block.. also don't under estimate the 5.3L it is also a great motor in stock form but with any thing stock i would be Leary of going over 8-10 psi of boost..

If you do decide to switch to a 6.0L, make sure you order the L76 Vortec Max engine. Much stronger than the other 6.0L offerings from GM. You can really get some power out of it.

What ever you are going to do, if you put on a supercharger or turbos you will have to have it custom tunned!

For the record, texas speed sells a kit to turn a 5.3 into a 383. I think you have to bore the block .125 over tho :shock:

I would be interested to know what the long term reliability would be of a stroked out 5.3 to a 383 and it being bored out .125 that is crazy..

How much power are you looking for? These engines are very durable. The article linked below is the reason I went with Chevy, I figured if even the 4.8 could deal with this torture, it would be just fine for anything I had in mind...

Many of the bolt-on supercharger kits come with everything you need and will add over 100hp reliably.
