Postby Jerkyking [OP] » Aug 05 2011, 12:47am

New owner here, I'm trying to find out if I which 5.3 my Silverado has.

How can I find out if its a LC9 or LMG? VIN Decoders have not been any help in this respect.

Thanks

I'm a new owner too and have researched this very issue. I have not found any evidence of an LMG used in a Silverado/Sierra (1500) in any recent production. I don't know where, if anywhere, the LMG is still used. Given the choice, I'd rather have the LC9 anyway since it's over 100lb lighter and I've never liked the idea of aluminum heads bolted to a cast iron block.

You should be able to look at the block and visually confirm the material. Cast iron doesn't look anything at all like cast aluminum. If your eyes aren't up to it, then take a magnet with you!! :)

Yes, I believe its a LC9 too... earlier models have/had the LMG. I'll pop the hood later today.

Thanks

The 8th character in the vin number will let you know which engine u have. I have a 3. So I have the LC9. I read it in the owners manual.

My 2010 Sierra has the O motor, kind of wish it was the aluminum block but I think it makes no real difference. If aluminum heads on iron blocks where that big of a deal they would have stopped building them that way a long time ago and my crew cab full size truck will never be a 1/4 mile rock star so the extra 100lbs does not bother me.
