5.3L oil pressure low

Postby 05gmcsierra [OP] » Jan 05 2013, 3:57am

Hey everyone, I'm a newbie on this forum. Just a couple quick questions about my '05 GMC Sierra. What would cause my oil pressure to drop from 40psi to 0psi while driving at 55/60mph? I get my oil change every 3K, my truck has 113,000 miles on it. I do see very little sludge on the dipstick but nothing major. The dipstick is always to the full level. Could the oil pump be gummed up? Or should I just clean the pan out and install a new oil pump. Oil change is due tomorrow. Any help is appreciated.

First... Youll need to verify the actual pressure drop. Its likely the gauge itself is failing or the sensor etc... Not that the actual pressure is falling.

+1

In the event of an accurate gauge, let us know what you find tomorrow. If there's still a full amount of oil in there, I would guess it's your oil pump.

How often is this happening? Ever at idle? Anyway to get a mechanical gauge on it and recreate?

Took the truck in this morning everything was fine until I got to the garage. 0psi pressure, towed it to a buddies garage for repairs. Looked online for for bulletins on the problem that I'm having. Found out that the oil pump problems are common with these engines (4.8/5.3/6.0), along with the pickup tube and the O-ring that seals the tube to the pump gear drive assembly. Also found out that could cause the problem is the Aluminum cylinder head is prone to cracking (Casting number 706). If the 706 head is cracked replace with the 862 casting. Oil and water will mix into a milkshake but it won't be visible on the dipstick. So if you are losing water probably you have a cracked head. Just giving you guys a heads up so nobody is put into my position in the future.

Here is an update on my truck, replaced both 706 casting heads with rebulit 862 castings. Everything was sludged up from pan to lifter valley, and heads(will upload pics later).Even in the intake there were signs of milky residue. Cleaned whole engine. Reassembled everything and went to prime motor and there was no reading on the oil pressure guage. Don't know what gives but I'm already at $1800.00 for the top end rebuild. Any suggestions?
