5.3L with 6 speed tranny fuel economy?

What kind of fuel economy do you get in your 5.3L with the 6 speed transmission?

5.3L with 6 speed tranny fuel economy?

Postby sastoller [OP] » Jan 19 2012, 6:57pm

Hey Guys!

New here, but hopefully i'll be around for a while. Went out and test drove some trucks (The Ford and Dodge were rubbish and the Toyota was just ok) the other day, and at this point I'm thinking about purchasing a used 2010 or 2011 Silverado or Sierra later this year and I was just curious what kind of real world fuel economy y'all are seeing with the 5.3L V8 and the 6 speed transmission. Most of the trucks i'm looking at are 4x4 with the 3.42 rear axle. Does the EPA estimated 21 mpg highway seem likely with this configuration?

Also, any suggestions or complaints about the 5.3L V8 or the transmission or other advice regarding these trucks are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a 2010 Z71 with the 5.3 / 6 speed / Tow Package / 3.73 rear. My one highway trip where I checked mileage was 23. I work in the city and live in the country. My daily commute is a mix of country roads, interstate, and city streets. My overall average mpg has dropped from 18.9 during the summer/fall to 18.7 with winter blend gas.

YMMV. I drive like an old fart.

I have a 2011 4x4 z71 3.42 gears with the tow package and I am getting about 18.5 on the freeway right now. The truck only has about 3800 mile on it. I just bought it new right before Thanksgiving. Hope this helps. I love my truck. Just a side note I traded in a 2007 Suburban 4x4 373 gears with a 4speed and i was only getting about 16 on the free way. Let us know what you get.

I have a 2010 5.3 2wd w/ 3.42's that I pretty much do all stop and go traffic with and get between 15-15.5 but hope to see more when I stop playing with the gas pedal with the Diablo inTune and Lew's custom tuning. On the highway I was getting 17.5-18 until my last trip to Orlando with AFM off and I averaged 16.8 which I won't do again w/ AFM off.

Thanks for the fast replies guys! It is good to hear that 20+ mpg on the highway is very doable with the 3.42 gears. I feel like the 5.3 with the 6 speed transmission is a really good sweet spot in the Silverado line. Plenty of power and decent fuel economy.

Do you guys have any other advice as far as what to look at when purchasing a used truck?

Thanks Again all!

Go over it with a fine tooth comb... beginning with the undercarriage and working your way up! Look for any evidence of frame stress, caked mud in out of the way places, oil leaks... everything!

I have a one month old 2011 Silverado Crew Cab 4x2. When I went to Atlanta and back last month, I only got 16-17 MPG averaging 75MPH. I was really disappointed with it. Actually, that is how I found this board looking for reasons for not achieving the 21MPG. Next time, I will try to stay below 70MPG.
