6.2L cam swap in 5.3L

6.2L cam swap in 5.3L

Postby GMtech3400 [OP] » May 23 2013, 11:32pm

I am looking to swap my 5.3L cam with a 6.2L cam I took out of camaro at our shop. Is this possible? I know the cam sensor is in the rear of my truck. But I think I can use the 6.2L front cover on my truck and run the cam sensor wires to the front. Anybody with information would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure we have a lot of engine builders here but I'd like to know if you get an answer on this. I'm always looking for upgrade ideas and this sounds like a good one.

I know a a good swap for our 5.3L is the LS6 cam. U would have to install harden pushrods & LS6 springs. From what I hear, this set up works great with the 243 stock heads & of course LT Headers. :)

I have heard great things about the 5.3 heads (high compression heads). I know that the cam needs heavier springs to prevent valve float at high RPM's since bigger cams increase the amount the valve is opened. Then the hardened pushrods are needed because of the heavier springs. I have a bit of experience with older carb'ed 350's and camming them. The LS style motors (all trucks have these motors since like 02 or 03 I believe) are Mass Air Flow (MAF sensor) motors which work great with cams. The older Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP sensor) motors hated cams because they ran the motor off of intake vacuum. And when you go with a bigger cam, it will decrease intake vacuum at idle. The MAF doesn't care about vacuum, only the amount of air that is going into the engine so they can handle the bigger cams much easier. Sorry if I'm beating an old horse there...

I have a couple of buddies that race these engines and have done AMAZING drag times with stock blocks and stock heads, just porting out the heads and upgrading the valves/doing valve jobs. People who are building 6.0's and 6.2's for race cars look for the 5.3 heads, so that has mean something.

It all just depends on what you're looking for. Sadly, when you start upgrading internals, you have to do just about everything in order for it to work right and for you to get all of the potential out of the performance parts.
