Do all Vortech 5300 5.3L V8 have Active Fuel Management System?

Active Fuel Management System

Postby NewToTruck [OP] » Jan 04 2012, 9:05pm

I found the posters talking about their Active Fuel Management Systems on this board regarding their fuel economy. As I am new to a Chevy Truck (or any pickup truck), I did not even know this feature existed for 2011 Silverado 5.3L V8. My question is this: Do all Vortech 5300 5.3L V8 engines have Active Fuel Management System? If so, how do I know it's working?

Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure about the newest models, however, my 2005 does not have it.

Pretty sure they do. There should be a set of 4 buttons next to the instrument panel, just to the left of the tach gauge. Push the one on the top, which is your trip/fuel button. Your first screen is odometer, then trip, fuel range, average economy, fuel used, timer, trans temp, and last is instant economy and AFM monitor. When at idle, it should read "0 MPG" and 8 CYL or something along those lines. You can leave it on this screen while driving, and the AFM should drop down to 4 CYL mode when you're crusing at city/highway speeds and there isn't a substantial load on the engine.

Once you push down on the accelerator, it should kick in to 8 cylinder mode again. Then you know it's working :D. This is of course, assuming, that your truck is equipped with AFM. If you bought the truck new then it should indicate it on the window sticker...at least mine did.

From the GM website:
"AFM is also currently used on the standard 5.3-L Sierra and Yukons with the 5.3, 6.0 or 6.2-L V8 as well as Chevrolet pickups and Chevrolet and Cadillac SUVs."

If you have a SLT or LTZ the buttons will be on the right side of the cluster.

It's my understanding that the 5.3 Liter and the 6.0 VortecMax V8s have had AFM since the GMT900 made it's debut in 2007. I believe the VortecMax was replaced by the 6.2 liter V8 in 2011 and does not have AFM. The 4.3 V6 and the 4.8 V8 have never had AFM. I have also been led to believe that AFM costs about 20 BHP in a Modern GM V8. I am addressing 1500 series trucks only here.

Thank you very much everyone for your posts. I found the display tonight and left it there, but did not drive. I will find out if it goes to 4cyl tomorrow. I was toggling these displays only when I was stopped, and did not realize what the last one was for.

I've noticed if the engine is good and cold the computer waits for it to warm up a bit before it does the switch from V8 to V4.

This morning, I drove with the AFM showing. It did go from V8 to V4 when I was cursing. I was driving much slower than usual when I kept seeing the instantaneous MPGs all the way to my work, LOL. Again, thank you everyone for giving the advises to such a novice.

All new body style trucks with 5.3L have AFM. The 6.2L in the Suv's also have AFM BUT the 6.2L in the 1500 truck DOES NOT. Since the 2007 debut of the GMT900 trucks you cannot get a 5.3L that does not have AFM. Speaking 1500 series only.

You can buy a GM SUV without an AFM engine. Only in trucks is there a choice but for how long remains to be seen as new federal regulations would raise fuel efficiency standards for cars and light trucks, hitting an average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
